SELINA MOORE

Selina writes… “At the age of seven, I started to wrestle. I had tried cheerleading and girl scouts before, so when I told my dad back in 2013 that I wanted to wrestle, he didn’t hold me back…but it was definitely a surprise. I wrestled for my school for about three years before I moved on to a club to better my wrestling skills.
The one club that I probably owe so much to is the Gorilla Grapplers. They welcomed me as a female, and treated me as their own from the first day I stepped foot into their room. It’s hard to believe it’s been about eight years since that day. It changed my life forever as the people I consider family and the amount of skill I acquired in that time.
Along with training out of Gorilla Grapplers coached by Nate Leonard and Brandon Cole, I also had a lot of support and training from my first varsity coaches as a 7th grader. Sherburne-Earlville, the high school I have attended my whole life, had never had a female wrestler at my age go on a varsity team. They spent a lot of time with me, and I always had really good mentors in the room to look up to.
I made the varsity boys team as a seventh grader, and continued to wrestle boys during high school season, until my junior year when it was both girls and boys. Through the years, I have participated in many Pennsylvania dual teams, including Misfits Girls Wrestling. Coached by Jeff Morretti and Jodie Horger, these amazing people have given me the chance to be on some very competitive teams and make it to the finals at almost every dual tournament.
With all these people and the support of my family, especially my dad, I have really grown to be the person I am today.
Wrestling has brought me so much happiness and peace in my life, along with some frustration as well, but at the end of the day I wouldn’t change it for the world because so many friendships and people I consider family have came out of all the experiences that I’ve had in this sport.”

“Wrestling is one of the sports where it’s not just a sport. Wrestling is the definition of hard work and dedication because at the end of the day it’s just you out on the mat. It’s an individual sport that only you yourself can put the effort into to be better. This sport teaches you so much respect and dedication that makes you a better person for life’s endeavors.”
